The Wyoming County Chamber and Tourism office announced today that the first Wyoming County Geocaching Trail (WyCoGT) is available and ready to navigate. Geocaching is a family-friendly outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and attempt to find a geocache (container) hidden at that location.
The purpose of geocaching is to introduce people to new and interesting things in the world around them. This could be long hikes in beautiful spaces, visiting a historical landmark, or just learning something new right in your backyard!
“The geo-trail is a family-friendly activity, providing visitors with a wholesome outdoor experience, while showcasing Wyoming County’s unique attractions and beautiful landscapes,” said Tourism and Marketing Director Eric Szucs. “This has been a significant project that would not have been possible without the support of local businesses, New York State Parks Officials and local geocachers Crystal Fisher, Jim Nelson and Ken Wallace. The trail was a collaborative process that provides visitors yet another opportunity to discover what makes Wyoming County such an exceptional place to explore.”
Twelve caches have been hidden throughout Wyoming County, highlighting local attractions and businesses, including Artisan Villa, Beaver Meadow Audubon Center, Byrncliff Resort and Banquets, The Farmer’s Wife, Hidden Valley Animal Adventure, Letchworth State Park, Silver Lake State Park, and more. The geo-trail will remain active for two years with plans to expand upon it, adding more fun elements and new trail locations in future years.
To participate in the Wyoming County Geocaching Trail, you will need:
- A GPS-enabled phone and or handheld GPS device. If you have a smart phone, you should be all set.
- Create a free profile on the Geocaching.com website so you can look up the geocaches and begin your adventure
- Search for the WyCoGT geocaches, go find them and collect the special code word in each geocache
- Visit the Wyoming County Tourism website to submit the code words and receive your commemorative Wyoming County wooden nickel. Only 300 were produced which makes it a collectable item.
